the rerun ust and what makes it stand out to me

back to blog page

an attempt at analyzing a current fixation.

jesus christ its been forever since i did anything significant on this site, im so sorry. i still dont have any plans on what i wanna do with this site yet so uhhhh, just have this for now.

so, sonic.exe amirite? it's a weird subject to talk about because of the insane confusing history around it, but we're looking into a specific part of the fandom. a small web video project under the name of "sonic.exe rerun: the unofficial soundtrack"

what is the rerun ust? it's a fan-project of a fan-project. specifically the friday night funkin' mod "sonic.exe rerun". the mod is a sort of revival of the original exe mod that has spiraled into doing its own things, such as having its own version of x named scrimbo. its the main inspiration behind the ust. the rerun ust is a project that is essentially a collection of music videos that are unique takes on the various creepypastas that are depicted in rerun's original soundtrack, from unique takes on top-loader, gamebreaker, and even rerun's own scrimbo!

as of writing this, there have been 3 songs released:

so with formalities on what the fuck a rerun ust is, i wanna dig a bit deeper. because when drop and roll released this monday, i got this vibe from the song that i never felt from any other exe project, and this blog post is attempting to collect my thoughts and try to explain on WHY rerun is such a different exe project from so many others that have existed.

to do this, i will tackle this one character or song at a time, i will make comparisons to the main inspirations of the project, such as rerun itself. and just try to piece together this shit.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

GAMEBREAKER DJ CORE

break the loop.

gamebreaker djcore is the debut song of the rerun ust, it has your usual fanfare of a gamebreaker remix, with pico facing off against the red virus, dx. however, this version has a twist, with the introduction of a sort of loop. the music video, and later an official description, reveals that squeaco has been part of a neverending loop with the song gamebreaker playing on repeat. every loop changes their looks and the song itself to a degree, forever sealing squeaco and ds to fight forever.

if it wasn't obvious enough, djcore is a sort-of meta commentary on gamebreaker itself, and the hundreds of remixes that exist for this one song. implying that as long as remixes of this song comes out, squeaco and ds are destined to continue brawling. im not sure what further commentary can be extracted from this song but i think this is already a strong example of what sets rerun ust apart for me. this song takes inspiration from not only its source material but also the community itself and its habits.

to be continued im really tired.
